Struggling with an itchy or dry scalp? Try a Scalp Treatment That Works

Scalp Care Is the New Skincare

When we talk about healthy hair, people often jump straight to ends, colour or styling, but the real magic happens at the root. Your scalp is your hair’s foundation. Like the skin on your face, it needs balance, hydration and care to function at its best. A consistent scalp treatment routine can make all the difference, whether you're dealing with dry, oily or itchy scalp.

At Love Hair, we see more and more clients asking about their scalp health. About 1 in 20 clients sit in our chairs with visible scalp issues, whether it’s dry scalp, oily scalp, itchy scalp or flakes, sometimes without even realising there’s an underlying problem. It’s more common than you think, and the good news is that it's treatable, both in the salon and at home.

Why a healthy scalp really matters

Everything starts at the scalp! Each hair strand grows from a follicle in the scalp, and that follicle is connected to your body’s blood supply. This is where your hair receives nutrients, oxygen and hormonal signals. If your scalp is unbalanced, it affects everything, from how your hair grows to how it looks and feels. A healthy scalp treatment approach helps manage oil, calm irritation and encourage healthy growth, no matter your hair type or lifestyle.

For example, when your scalp gets too warm or stressed, it can overstimulate oil production, leaving your roots greasy and heavy. On the flip side, a dry or irritated scalp may flake, feel tight or make styling uncomfortable. A healthy scalp is essential for strong, shiny hair that behaves the way you want it to.

Common scalp sensitivities (and why they happen)

Scalp concerns don’t have a one-size-fits-all cause. Often, it’s a combination of internal and external triggers.

Internal factors

Your diet, stress levels, quality of sleep and hormone fluctuations all impact scalp health. When you’re tired or stressed, your scalp can feel tight or itchy. Certain foods or lifestyle shifts may cause oiliness or flare-ups.

Hormonal changes

When there are hormone fluctuations you can see changes in your scalp. Around perimenopause or menopause, we often see an increase in dry, sensitive scalps. This can be due to shifts in oil production and how your skin responds to external factors. If your scalp suddenly feels more reactive, this might be the reason.

If this sounds familiar, you might also want to read our blog on menopause and hair loss, which covers these changes in more detail.

External influences

Singapore’s hot, humid climate, air-conditioning and even the quality of your shower water can impact your scalp. Build-up from hair products, sweat and pollution can add another layer of build up on the scalp.

In some cases, more serious skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema or even scalp acne may appear. These often stem from internal imbalances, but they can be worsened by everyday habits or unsuitable hair products.

What might be making it worse (and how a scalp treatment can help)

Sometimes it's the little things we do without realising that trigger or worsen scalp issues:

  • Over-washing: This strips away your scalp’s natural oils and leaves it dry and reactive. Try washing every second or third day and use a pH-balancing shampoo to keep your scalp calm.

  • Heavy products: Using thick conditioners or styling sprays near the scalp can clog follicles and lead to discomfort. Keep these products on your mid-lengths and ends only and leave the roots clean and product-free.

  • Improper rinsing: Product residue can throw off your scalp’s pH, leading to itchiness or flakes. If you're not regularly exfoliating, build-up can stay behind and aggravate the skin. Take an extra minute to rinse thoroughly with cool water, especially at the roots and nape of your neck. A weekly scalp exfoliation can help clear the follicles and reduce irritation.

  • Using the wrong products in the wrong places: For example, volume sprays can go near the root, but hairsprays and texture mists should stay on the lengths and ends. Always read the label, and if you're unsure, ask your stylist during your next visit.

At-home care and how to keep results going

Once you’ve experienced the Scalp Spa in the salon, you can continue your care routine at home with the same Kevin Murphy products. These are available in our salon or online store

We recommend you experience the scalp treatment in the salon first so you understand how to use the products. Our stylists are always happy to walk you through what’s best for your specific scalp type, plus you’ll pick up a few extra tips & tricks along the way.

Here are a few insider tips:

  • Use the balancing shampoo every wash if you’re prone to ongoing sensitivity, oiliness, dry scalp, itchy scalp

  • Apply the serum directly to the scalp, not the hair, and massage gently with your fingertips

  • Exfoliate once a week if you use styling products regularly or live in a high-pollution area

  • Give it time: Let the scalp treatment sit for a few minutes before rinsing to allow active ingredients to work

A little goes a long way and consistent care makes all the difference.

When it’s time to seek more support

Some scalp issues are persistent and may need more than in-salon scalp treatment. If you’ve been dealing with redness, soreness or excessive flaking for a while, speak to your stylist. We can often help identify what’s going on, but in some cases, we may suggest visiting a dermatologist for a deeper look.

There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Scalp health is part of your overall wellbeing. Flakes on your shoulders or itching at your roots doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong, it just means your scalp needs a bit of extra love.

Is it time for a scalp treatment?

Haircare goes beyond just what you see in the mirror, it starts where you can’t see. Your scalp, much like your skin, needs regular care and the right products to stay happy and balanced.

When your scalp feels good, your hair follows suit. It grows stronger, feels softer and holds styles better. So the next time you think about a treatment, think beyond the ends and start at the root with a scalp treatment.

Whether you're managing itchy scalp, dry scalp or want to enjoy a soothing scalp exfoliation, we're here to help.
