Curly Hair Extensions Are Here

Why Curly Hair Needs a Completely Different Approach

We've been asked so many times for curly hair extensions. And until now our answer has always been "coming soon." Well, now they’re here and we can’t wait to tell you more about how we can curl match to the perfect curly hair extensions just for you.

If you saw our straight hair extensions launch last year, you’ll know we don’t rush a new service out, everything is always backed with comprehensive training. Curly hair extensions are different to straight ones and we wanted to get this right before bringing them to you.

Why curly hair extensions are a different process altogether

With straight hair extensions, colour match is really the main thing to get right. Extensions for curly hair are a different process entirely, and treating them the same way is where most salons go wrong. Colour is only half of it. We also need to curl match your unique curl pattern, because curls are not one size fits all. Some clients have a tighter coil, some have a looser wave and most people actually have a combination of textures across their head.

Rather than using one uniform curl pattern that looks obviously added on, we personalise every order with a combination of curl textures to mimic your natural distribution. It takes more thought, and more time, but it’s the only way curly hair extensions actually blend rather than sit on top of your hair looking separate from it.

Curly hair extension process

  1. Consultation first. You come in to discuss your options, your colour and your curl pattern with us. This is where we work out exactly what you want, what your hair is doing and what it needs.
  1. Colour matching happens after your colour, not before. This is the part that trips people up. If you colour your hair you will need to do that first, as we match the extensions to your hair colour. We don’t dye the extensions, they’re ordered to match your final colour.

If you don’t dye your hair then we match the extensions to your natural hair colour, it’s one less step for you.

  1. We order your hair specifically. Once we have your colour and curl match confirmed, your extensions are ordered to match your unique requirements. It typically takes around three to seven days for your hair to arrive after your consultation, sometimes longer for custom colours or lengths.

Book a free consultation to discuss the process and get your curly hair extensions.

Can I dye my hair with curly hair extensions?

We can do a root tint with extensions already installed, so if your roots need attention down the line, that doesn’t mean removing everything first. But for refreshed highlights, the extensions will need to be removed.

This comes back to how the extensions are colour matched in the first place. Once your hair is coloured and your extensions are matched to it, that match is fixed to your hair at that point in time. A root tint stays close enough to your existing colour that it will not throw the match off, which is why we can do it with extensions in. Highlights change the tone and pattern of your colour more significantly, and to keep everything looking cohesive, we need to remove the extensions first, do the highlights, then reassess the colour match before putting extensions back in.

It’s worth planning for this if you know highlights are part of your regular routine. Talk to us about your usual colour schedule at your consultation, so we can plan extension removal and refitting around it rather than it catching you out later.

Why we didn’t rush the sourcing

Curly hair extensions are genuinely harder to source well than straight ones. Most suppliers get around this by perming straight hair into a curl pattern, which never quite behaves like the real thing and doesn’t hold up in the same way over time. We wanted the real thing, so we have partnered with Gold Class Hair, whose curly collection is entirely natural hair from donors with a naturally wavy or curly texture, ethically sourced and available up to a 3c curl pattern. The range of hair they have allows us to curl match best for you.

Are curly hair extensions reusable or single use?

Not all extension methods behave the same and this is worth understanding before you choose.

Pre bonded extensions are the lowest maintenance option and typically last up to four months, but they are not designed to be reused once removed. They are single use.

Hand tied wefts are a reusable method, so with the right care they can be taken out, refitted and used again.

Micro ring extensions are also reusable. They are repositioned roughly every six to eight weeks as your natural hair grows, and the same hair can be reapplied each time.

During your consultation we will talk you through which method suits your hair, your lifestyle and your budget, including how that affects reuse and long term cost. There’s no single right answer here, it depends entirely on what you want from the service. This is exactly why we don’t offer extensions for curly hair as a one size fits all package.

Hair extensions for textured hair need specialist knowledge

Hair extensions for textured hair are only as good as the person fitting them and maintaining them. Whether your texture is a loose wave or a tight coil, hair extensions for textured hair need someone who understands how that specific pattern behaves day to day, not just how it looks in the chair. Curl patterns move, dry and settle differently to straight hair, and upkeep matters more than it does with straight extensions.

Getting the curl match right at the start only works if the ongoing care keeps pace with it. Our stylists will help you understand how to look after your extensions so you get the best from them.

Frequently asked curly hair extensions questions

Who is Love Hair Singapore's curly hair specialist?

Jane manages curly cuts, colour and extensions together in the Singapore salon, so you're not explaining your hair to someone new for each service.

Do I have to remove my extensions before colouring my hair?

Root tints are fine while extensions are in. Highlights shift your tone enough that the extensions need to come out first.

How long is the wait for curly hair extensions once I've had my consultation?

Your hair is ordered to your exact colour and curl match, and typically arrives within three to seven days, longer for custom orders.

Are curly hair extensions single use or can they be reused?

Whether you can re-use curly hair extensions depends on the method. Pre-bonded is single use, hand-tied wefts and micro ring extensions can be removed and refitted.

Why does curly hair need a specialist for extensions?

Because curl patterns dry, move and settle differently to straight hair, so fitting and upkeep both need someone who understands that texture specifically.
