15 Top Tips for your hair in the humidity

The sun is shining, and in Hong Kong and Singapore the humidity is back, or here to stay permanently!

Most people stop bothering to do their hair as they feel like it's a losing battle. Especially because every time you walk out the door your hair immediately starts to frizz. High humidity can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it frizzy, flat, or unmanageable.

To fight humidity and keep your hair looking its best, here are ten tips you can try:

  1. STARTING from the first step of washing your hair, use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. This helps to maintain the moisture content to prevent dryness. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner: Keeping your hair well-hydrated will make it less likely to absorb moisture from the air. Look for products that contain natural oils and humectants. I recommend wash and rinse by Kevin Murphy.
  2. Apply an anti-humidity styling product: There are many products available that are specifically designed to fight humidity. Look for styling creams, serums, or sprays that contain a natural silicone, which can create a barrier between your hair and the moisture in the air. I recommend blow.dry wash & rinse or smooth again Kevin Murphy.
  3. Use a leave-in conditioner: Leave-in conditioners can help lock in moisture and prevent your hair from absorbing excess humidity. Apply a small amount to your damp hair and style as usual. I recommend everlasting colour leave in or staying alive.
  4. Blow-dry your hair: Blow-drying your hair can help reduce the amount of moisture it absorbs from the air. Use a round brush to create volume and bounce, and be sure to use a heat protectant spray to prevent damage. Kevin Murphy’s newest blow dry range will answer all your styling needs and have been a game changer living in Singapore.
  5. For wavy/curly hair, use a diffuser attachment (also on the cool setting!) on your hair dryer for beautiful curls with less frizz.
  6. Use an ionic hair dryer on the cool setting to get shinier, smoother frizz free locks. @ghd have the best technology and are bets value for you money.
  7. Avoid hot showers: Even if you love to have a hot shower, have a cold rinse at the end to close down the cuticle as this helps with shine and smoothness. Hot showers can open up the cuticles of your hair, making it more prone to absorbing moisture from the air. Stick to lukewarm water instead.
  8. Use a microfiber towel: Microfiber towels are gentle on hair and can help absorb excess moisture without causing frizz. Gently squeeze out excess water and let your hair air dry as much as possible.
  9. Wear your hair up: Keeping your hair up in a bun, braid, or ponytail can help prevent it from coming into contact with the humidity in the air.
  10. Invest in a dehumidifier: If you live in a particularly humid area, consider investing in a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air.
  11. Avoid touching your hair: Touching your hair can cause frizz and disrupt your hairstyle. Try to avoid touching it throughout the day, and use a silk scarf or pillowcase at night to prevent friction.
  12. See a professional: If you're still struggling with humidity, consider seeing a professional stylist who can recommend products and techniques tailored to your hair type and climate. There are some defrosting services we can offer for a solution, these are very popular in Hong Kong and Singapore. We offer a natural keratin smoothing and defrizzing treatment at Love Hair.
  13. Have your hair trimmed regularly (6-12 weeks) to maintain split ends.
  14. Invest in satin pillows to keep your hair smooth without ruffing it up during your beauty.
  15. In stead of hard water, I highly recommend a filter for your shower. High levels of chemicals like chlorine can be in the water which is really damaging for your hair and colour.
